The bills and legislation proposed and often passed by these conservatives are consistently opposed to homosexuality. In fact, many bills pitch the civil rights of ethnic and racial minorities against the rights of gay and lesbian people; thus, even when a socially progressive bill appears among conservatives, it does so usually at the expense of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. In one New York City school board meeting, to take just one example, conservative Christians advocated the agendas of ethnic and racial interest groups, but did so at the expense of lesbian and gay concerns.

By applying contemporary queer theories to Christian theology, I argue that the church is the ideal location for questioning such institutions as the nuclear, heterosexual family. We are a people founded on the community called church; we understand ourselves within that community to constitute the Body of Christ. More strongly, I believe that our Christian commitment to God manifests itself first and foremost through our commitment to community. I argue that a more faithful and more radical sexual ethic can stem from grounding our ideas first and foremost in this community.

The book was conceived while I was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton's Center for the Study of American Religion, and the guidance of many seminar membersespecially Bob Wuthnow, John Wilson, and Nancy Ammermanwas extremely important.
